The Unjust Vilification of the Gingerbread Man from Nelson Wang on Vimeo.
This is an animatic for a short film idea I had for Animation Mentor class 5. It’s way too long (supposed to be under 30 seconds) and after showing it to a few people, I found that the connection between the little girl and the gingerbread man are not established enough for the audience to feel sorry for either one of them. It also seems like people aren’t very entertained when they watch this, therefore I will file this under the “More fun to make than it was to watch” category.
Also, there’s also an inherent flaw that someone pointed out to me, that people are SUPPOSED to eat cookies, so unless I did a better job personifying the cookie (ie make it dance around or something) there’s nothing really wrong with what she did.
The theme of the story was to convey the idea that people tend to modify things/people in order to cater to their greedy needs, but I think that moral is lost and the idea is maybe too complicated for a 30 second piece. Which is funny because this was the simplest idea I had at the time.
I’ve learned that this is a case of over thinking things and I’m now trying to think of a MUCH simpler idea for a short film. So, for now, this will remain as is, unless I really can’t think of a better idea, which then I will maybe revisit it and try to edit it down to a simpler idea.
Thanks.

I think your set up and execution in the storyboards work nicely. I found myself crackin’ up at the Gingerbread Man’s face after the girl messes with it.
If you end up going with this idea, I think adding some frosting coming out of the Gingerbread Man’s bitten off head would be hilarious, but that’s just me.
